2 years, 11 countries, and over 40 cities. Our lives as The Freedom Travellers have been pretty damn awesome so far.
We’ve travelled far and wide over the past couple of years. We’ve visited incredible places, sampled crazy local cuisines, witnessed beautiful sunrises and breathtaking sunsets. We’ve surfed, we’ve bungy jumped, we’ve scuba dived and snorkelled. Best of all we’ve met the most amazing people who have become life long friends.
When we quit our jobs to travel the world we could have chosen pretty much anywhere we wanted to set up camp. But we always finish up each adventure by touching down back home in Sydney.
From San Fran to Vegas, Paris to London…we’ve seen and fallen in love with many places but if home is where the heart is then Sydney, Australia has definitely stolen mine.
Of all the cities in the world that we’ve visited so far, Sydney still manages to top our list as the place we want to call home. Elaina grew up here and I chose to move here from the UK almost 8 years ago. It’s pretty special to both of us for very different reasons.
So, in true Freedom Travellers style, we wanted to let you in on a few secret spots here in our home city that we reckon you’ll totally dig. Sharing is caring right?!
Here what feels like home to us in the form of our top secret Sydney spots that we just can’t get enough of when we’re not travelling the world…with a few ideas on how you can enjoy them thrown in for good measure!
For a fun night with your homies: Frankie’s Pizza
Think underground pizza joint with pinball machines and live music. Frankie’s Pizza is our kinda’ fun night out! Back when I worked in the CBD, I loved this place and it’s still one of the best places to go with a few mates for a slice of pizza and a few drinks.
Personally, I go for the pinball machine action! They also have live music every night AND karaoke…need I say more?!
Frankie’s Pizza, 50 Hunter Street, Sydney
For a secluded beach hang: Shelly Beach
Australian beaches are, in our opinion, the best in the world and with over 100 to choose from in Sydney alone we are spoilt for choice! But forget Bondi and Manly (even though we love them). A little spot that’s lesser known but still easy to get to is one of our favourite beach hangs…the gorgeous Shelly Beach.
The recent addition of The Boat House has definitely boosted Shelly’s popularity, so there can be a few more peeps around than there used to be.
But if you’ve never been to Sydney, or maybe you live here and want to venture somewhere a little different, this hidden cove a hop, skip and a jump from Manly is perfect for a sunny Sydney afternoon.
For the self confessed coffee snob: Artificer Speciality Coffee Bar & Roastery
Blink and you’ll miss it. Our go to coffee spot round the corner from home was a lucky find on Instagram and is now our first stop when we hop off a long haul flight.
Shoji and Dan who run this place (yep, we know our baristas by name) have got their coffee down to a fine art. In fact, these guys only do coffee. That’s right, no fancy muffins or eggs benedict here. Just perfectly roasted beans and the best lattes for miles around! If you like to make your own coffee at home, you can even get some beans to go…not something we do as we are lazy coffee drinkers but the option is there!
Hit this place up and tell em’ we sent you.
Artificer Speciality Coffee Bar & Roastery, 547 Bourke Street, Surry Hills
For a plant-based burger: Soulburger
As many of you know, we made the decision to go vego last year. We gave up alcohol too but that’s another story! Some may call us boring, but we’re totally loving our new (healthier!) lifestyle.
One of the best things about making a change like this is getting to experiment with all the vegetarian and vegan restaurant offerings and this one is pretty spesh! We know some die hard meat eaters who LOVE a burger from this place…and that’s because you can hardly tell the difference!
Soulburger puts their heart and soul (get it?!) into creating gourmet burger creations that are doing something positive for the environment. We love a good movement and these guys have a goal to change the world and the way we eat by flipping burgers for change.
Tag your photos on IG and facey with #burgermovement to win a free feed. Love your work guys!
Soulburger, The Spot, 49 Perouse Road, Randwick
For the best gelato this side of the Harbour Bridge: Messina
Ok, ok, this isn’t a secret AT ALL if you live in Sydney but we couldn’t create a list of our most loved places without including our fave sweet treat. I’m ashamed to admit this now but we only discovered this place a year or so ago, shock horror!
Messina is an art form…so much so that it made the list of our top spots in Surry Hills which just so happens to be our home suburb. I won’t admit that we moved here for the gelato…or did I just admit that?
Our favourite flavours include salted caramel and pretty much any of the specials. Check their Instagram (@gelatomessina) to see what’s new each week.
Oh dear, I now sound like a gelato addict. Oh wait, I am a gelato addict!
Messina, 389 Crown Street, Surry Hills
TIP: This is our local Messina but they are scattered around everywhere now…check out their website to find your nearest store!
For cultured types (and those who love a good photo op!): The MCA
I’ve been know to hit up the odd art gallery or two on our travels…Elaina not so much…but here at home, we both have a soft spot for one of the coolest buildings on the block…The Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) down at Circular Quay.
Now they say that Sydney Harbour is one of the most recognised international icons in the world and there’s a secret spot in the MCA that will give you an awesome view. Head up to the café on level 4 and you’ll be wowed by the photo op from the balcony.
A great time of year to check out the MCA from the outside is during our favourite festival of lights…Vivid! It’s coming up soon so lock 27 May – 18 June in your diaries.
So, there you go! We’ve let you in on a few of our top secret spots in Sydney. Now you’re in the know, even if you’re not a Sydneysider yourself, we hope that one day you’ll hop on a flight and come for a visit.
After all, everyone needs to visit the best city in the world at least once in their lifetime. Who knows, you could even move from the other side of the world and live here…like I did.
What makes your home city awesome? We’re always looking for new places to visit so comment below and give us some ideas!
